Bokhara Turkoman rugs are produced by nomadic weavers of Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the province of Khorassan in northeastern Iran. Their dominant features are the Turkoman ghuls, also known as 'elephant feet.' It is common to find the ghuls of 'tekke,' 'salor' and 'ersari' as well as many other tribes' historically associated with the Great Silk trade routes.
Weavers of these regions usually use the symmetrical Turkish double knotting style, which tends to be dense and tightly packed down. The asymmetrical Persian knot can also be seen in cities such as Ardabil. The pile of these rugs is thick lustrous wool, handspun from local sheep. Cotton is the material of choice for the foundation because of its durability. Made with 100-percent wool known as 'qaraqol,' this magnificent piece features 268 knots per square inch. This fine Bokhara rug has a red background and border. With accent colors of black, ivory, and soft peach, it really ties a room together.
